The National Automobile Dealers Association celebrates its 100th birthday from January 26-29 in the Big Easy
A mere 10 months after the previous convention in Las Vegas, auto dealers and their employees, manufacturers, vendors, vertical industries, and many others have packed their bags to head to the Big Easy for the biggest show of the year: the 2017 National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) Convention & Expo.
This year’s event in New Orleans, running from January 26–29 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, commemorates a truly historic milestone: the 100th anniversary of NADA. A group of dealers, initially 30 in number, gathered in 1917 and went to Washington to convince Congress that cars were vital to the U.S. economy, not mere luxuries. Later that year, NADA held its first annual meeting at the Chicago Auto Show, with 138 delegates.
How far NADA has come since—having weathered the Depression, two world wars, economic highs and lows, massive regulatory hurdles, and much more—to get to its position of strength today, with a membership of more than 16,000 franchised new car and truck dealers. And once again, in 2017 NADA and its members are facing a time of uncertainty and change.
This year’s convention takes place the week following the inauguration of President Donald J. Trump. The incoming president has already been outspoken on automotive industry issues—particularly in terms of carmakers and their manufacturing locations, threatening huge tariffs on companies building new factories outside of the U.S. The implications for manufacturers and dealers are sure to be top-of-mind topics at the keynote speeches, general sessions, and franchise meetings.
But of course, the NADA experience isn’t just industry trends and politics—the exhibition hall is the place many attendees will be spending most of their time.
