Window Tinting Prices: Three Things That Make a Difference

If you’re an automotive dealer, chances are many of your clients plan to tint their newly purchased vehicles. If you’re not offering tint already, it’s a safe bet that you’re clients will come across a plethora of film options and price points. As a dealer, use this as an opportunity to polish your reputation. Know what advice to give your clients. After all, what’s better than a return client?

Before advising your client to zone in on a target price range, it’s highly worthwhile to explain what accounts for price variation to begin with. It’s highly probable that prior to purchasing their vehicles, they set out certain quality expectations. You didn’t let them down with that. You most likely explained how quality difference in vehicle options would make a sizable impact on the final price. Be sure to explain that the same is true for window tinting.

Let’s take a few minutes to examine three essential components that will contribute to what will eventually be rang on the register, so to speak. That way you can be best advised on which direction it’s probably best to steer your clients. Taking a few minutes to explain their options can go a long way into guiding a well-thought purchase. Imagine what kind of points you would score by acting as a true advocate to a customer?

Heat Protection Rate: Does it Matter?

This will be especially pivotal if your clients live in a warm weather climate and do a lot of driving. It may be less-so important if you’re dealership is situated in a more temperate city. In any event, the rate of heat protection offered by the window tint your clients eventually purchase will dramatically impact price for them.

So How Much Is Enough?

Experts suggest on installing a window tinting film with at least 30 percent heat protection for those living in four-season climates, while recommending 50 percent rejection for those driving in some of the warm-weather climates. A film featuring ironclad heat protection should be expected to cost a minimal of $200 per sedan. A film offering a more moderate dose should be doable for $150. One thing is for sure: Nobody wants to overpay for heat protection they don’t need as well as purchase a product that doesn’t afford the protection needed. Explain that to your clients. They should be urged to investigate this category before having any film installed.

Aesthetic Quality

It’s true: Not all tinting products are the same. If your client wants a hands-on demonstration, instruct them to stand at any busy street corner. After watching 50 tinted vehicles pass, there’s an extremely good chance that they’ll notice a difference you were talking about. It’s essential to explain that window films are made with a variety of materials. While some materials appeal to the budget-minded, others make their mark with luxury customers.

Aesthetic quality is also much of a personal preference (A very similar concept you may have explained on the sales floor). While some may prefer to spend less money on a more basic, after-market type film, others may insist that their window tinting job gives off a factory/showroom-like appeal. One thing is for certain: there is a difference. That’s why it’s best to recommend to clients that they insist on taking in a preview of several films prior to any installation. While a film with a more basic aesthetic appeal may run $150-$200, your clients can expect to dole out significantly more for a true factory-installed look.



Warranty Coverage

This comes down to more than just peace of mind: Your client most likely will want to know that their purchase is protected. Most film warranties carry a lifetime term, however, there are varieties of one, three and five years. Much of this decision will center upon the term they expect to keep your vehicle (you should be well familiar with that). But that’s not all. If a film offers a one-year warranty, it may not have great quality in other areas either. That’s something that most certainly ought to be considered by any client of yours.

Further, instruct your clients that they should receiving both a manufacturer and installation warranty. Many companies offering a “Lifetime Warranty” refer only to the manufacturer’s film warranty. While a manufacturer will most typically cover liabilities such as film color change, it will most certainly not cover installation-related failures. Be sure to point them to a reputable service that will guarantee their work in writing—not simply the durability of the film itself. A most basic film with a lifetime warranty can typically have in the $140-$160 range (for a full sedan). Of course, heat protection and aesthetics are sure to add to that amount.

In all, it’s essential for your clients to have command over any purchase made for their vehicles. This is a great time to educate them. This is especially true for a purchase like window tinting that is made only once per vehicle cycle. Wouldn’t it pay to know that you took several minutes to enrich a client’s understanding of something that could truly go a far way? In this world of elevating client standards, don’t just sell the vehicle. Be an advocate to your client. That alone can work to build trust for decades.
